Abstract:: The War Information Center was set up by Brown University at the request of the Federal Security Agency, U.S. Office of Education in 1942, as a "Center of War Information and Training for Colleges and Universities in the State of Rhode Island." The Center consisted of a Morale Committee, a Library of Information, a Faculty Committee of Advisors, and a Council of Representatives from other colleges, etc. in the state.

Abstract:: The Lester Frank Ward papers in the John Hay Library consists of the correspondence, manuscripts, published writings, and personal library of a noted nineteenth-century American geologist, paleontologist, and sociologist. These materials reflect virtually all aspects of Ward's professional life, including his years of service as a member of the U. S. Geological Survey staff, his activities as a professor at both Columbian College (now George Washington University) and Brown University, and his long career as a writer of scholarly monographs and articles on many subjects. The papers also contain some information concerning his personal life.

Abstract:: The records in this group comprise documents relating to the activity of the Watson House Restoration Committee, Watson House Committee as well as its predecessor, the Furnishings Sub-Committee of the Watson House Restoration Committee. Included are minutes of the Committee and its subcommittees, budgets, correspondence of the committee chairs, members, and the Watson House caretakers. There are maintenance records, extensive inventories of the furnishings in the house as well as documents relating to the various activities that have taken place over the course of the committee's supervisory function of the Watson House.

Abstract:: Thomas J. Watson, Jr., (Brown University, class of 1937) was the President and C.E.O. of International Business Machines (1952-1971). After his retirement from I.B.M., Watson began a career in government service, serving as chairman of the General Advisor Committee on Arms Control and Disarmament and as Ambassador to the Soviet Union (1978-1981). Watson's papers document the period of his ambassadorship to the Soviet Union and his subsequent work in foreign policy matters from 1981 to his death in 1993.

(Heman Lincoln) Wayland (1830-1898), and other members of the Wayland family, dating from 1754 to 1941.

Abstract:: John J. Weir (1922-1977) grew up in the small seaside town of South Amboy, New Jersey. He became an avid reader of science fiction and horror in 1934 to escape the suffocating boredom of small town life. The John Weir papers contain autograph and typed correspondence to and from science fiction fans who were subscribers of or contributors to Weir’s fan magazine Fantasmagoria. Weir also received mail from many famous writers of the day, including H. P. Lovecraft, Clark Ashton Smith, William Lumley, Robert Bloch, Henry Kuttner, Sam Moskowitz, Emil Petaja, John Baltadonis, and Duane Rimel. The collection also includes a photograph, postcards, an issue of the fan magazine Sweetness and Light, and John Weir’s Scripto pencil.
