Abstract:
The Dexter Papers are a wide-ranging collection of letters, diaries, reports, manuscripts, research notes and photographs dating from the early 19th to the late 20th century. The material represents Elisabeth and Robert Dexter’s humanitarian work in Europe with the Unitarian Service Committee, their respective historical and sociological research projects, and the life and work of Elisabeth’s father Alfred Williams Anthony, a Baptist minister and educator.

Abstract:
The Joe and Lil Shapiro collection of laundry ephemera is a collection consisting largely of small format ephemera that depict the history, artifacts and materials used in doing laundry over several centuries. Most of the material was produced by companies involved in the manufacture of laundry products. The collection includes, but is not limited to, advertising premiums, billheads, broadsides, brochures, calendars, greeting cards, labels, matchbooks, pamphlets, photographs, postage stamps, poster stamps, promotional booklets, puzzles, scrapbooks, shirt boards and trade cards. Much of the material in the collection is undated. The dated material is from 1805 to 2010. Most was produced between 1880 and 1955.

The H. Adrian Smith papers (1752-1992) contain materials amassed over a lifetime of collecting magic-related materials and being involved in magic societies and magic performance. These materials include magic trick descriptions, playbills, posters, photographs of magicians and magic performances, publications, correspondence, and magic society materials. The collection also contains personal correspondence and photographs of Smith’s life in Providence, Rhode Island, and North Attleboro, Massachusetts with his wife Anna Fuller Smith.

Abstract:
The Henry Knox Thatcher papers consist of an oil painting of the U.S.S. Constellation, military memorabilia, and three journals and logs kept by Thatcher while on board several ships, including the U.S.S. Brandywine (1839-1841) and the U.S.S. Constellation (1862-1863). The journals reflect ship life, diversions on shore, the social and political climate of his time, and the duties of American ships in the Mediterranean during the early years of the Civil War.

Most of the material in the Alva Woods papers consists of correspondence, documents, publications and writings that belonged to the Alva Woods family and the Brown family of Providence, Rhode Island. Most of the material is dated between 1812 and 1918. The papers also include architectural drawings, ephemera, one map, newspaper clippings, handwritten recipes, and some photographs. The material is housed in two letter-size Hollinger document cases, one legal-size Hollinger document case and one triple oversize box.
