<head>Biographical note</head>
<dao xlink:href="http://www.riamco.org/img/RiWarSHS.jpg"/>
<p>Stephan Gmelin was an amateur maritime photographer based out of Cranford, NJ. He was also a longtime member of SSHSA, serving on the Board of Directors from 1951-1960 and writing eight articles for Steamboat Bill. Gmelin passed away on July 11, 2001.  </p>

<p>This collection comprises three drawers of clippings, ephemera, and photographs related to various steamships and steamship lines. Countries represented include Belgium, Brazil, Great Britain, Canada, Denmark, France, Germany, Greece, Italy, Japan, and the USA. Almost all of Drawer 2 contains folders on British lines, while all of Drawer 3 is devoted to United States lines and naval vessels of the Maritime Commission/World War II.</p>
