Historical Information

Fredrick D. Wampler worked for Elaine and Louis Lorillard in the summers of 1955 and 1956, assisting with the Newport Jazz Festival. During those summers he spent time at and photographed many Newport mansions that were later demolished in the 1950s, 1960s, and 1970s. Wampler later became a member of the Preservation Society of Newport County in 1967. After the publication of the book "Lost Newport" by Paul Miller, he was inspired to find his photographs of mansions that no longer existed.
