        <bioghist><head>Biographical/Historical Note</head>
            <p>Born Gertrude Louise Garrigus on December 8, 1914, in Evansville, Illinois, Jean Garrigue was an American poet and writing teacher. She published five collections of poetry during her lifetime, in addition to winning the Guggenheim Fellowship and was nominated for a National Book Award. Garrigue died December 27, 1972, in Boston, Massachusetts.</p>

                <p>The collection consists of one original response letter from Jean Garrigue, dated October 20, 1969, to Mr. Bill Read in Duxbury, Massachusetts. Garrigue states that the fee for two of her poems is fine and trusts that Read will ensure all copyrights are in check with Macmillan before publishing The Modern Poets.</p>
