The Rhode Island College Space Committee was created with the approval of Rhode Island College President David Sweet to be able to review and rearrange space across campus based on the needs of different departments. In 1985, the committee worked in tandem with interim Rhode Island College President John Nazarian to compose an overall report for the 1985-1986 academic year.
The earliest documents in this collection discuss the importance of the Space Committee from the active committee chair, Dr. Norman W. Smith. Further documents are correspondence between Smith and Rhode Island College President David Sweet regarding the delay in assigning a new chair. A college publication of February 18th, 1980, details the new committee, including the new chair. The 1985 documents discuss the recommendations of the ad hoc committee based on the space requests from different departments across campus.
