The Institutional Committee for Implementation and Coordination’s (ICIC) subcommittee on Returning Adult Learners was instituted by Rhode Island College (RIC) President Carol Guardo in 1989 to enhance RIC’s Continuing Education Program. This, in turn, separated the departmental responsibilities into the Office of Summer Sessions and Special Academic Offerings for non-matriculated students, and the Office of Returning Adult Students for adult learners.
This collection includes a subcommittee report discussing the nuances of the term “continuing education” and the college's plan to change the Office of Continuing Education to the Office of Summer Sessions and Special Academic Offerings, since the office actively targets non-matriculated undergrad students rather than “returning adults”. The report then proposes the creation of a separate office, the Office of Returning Adult Students, to target returning adults who at the time made up 25% of the RIC student body. A further document provided explains the policy by which the college intends to classify “non-matriculated” students. The final document is a communication between a subcommittee member and another college employee seeking advice on what the policy should be for when a Degree Candidate student is dropped to “non-matriculation”.
