The Major Academic Planning Committee was appointed by Rhode Island College (RIC) President Joseph F. Kauffman, and comprised of faculty, administrators, and students who met weekly from September 1969 to April 1970. The Committee was primarily charged with evaluating the academic developments of RIC in previous years, assessing the development of public higher education within the state of R.I., and determining RIC’s future academic goals.
The collection contains correspondence and reports of the Major Academic Planning (MAP) Committee. Correspondence is between MAP committee members and several individuals and organizations within and outside of Rhode Island College (RIC). Correspondents also include various academic departments within RIC; organizations such as the State Department of Community Affairs, the Urban Education Center in Providence, and the Rhode Island Development Council; and individuals such as Hercules M. Porter, director of the Urban Education Center, and Lawrence E. Dennis, Chancellor of State Colleges. A final report was presented on April 22, 1970, compiling the MAP Committee’s findings and proposals for future academic developments in accordance with the academic departments and the role of RIC in the context of state-wide higher education, as well as recommendations for future planning endeavors.
