The Lyra Brown Nickerson bequest of 1916 led Rhode Island School of Design to transfer financial management from the Metcalf family's Wanskuck Company to the Rhode Island Hospital Trust Company in 1917. The RIHT recorded the financial transactions until RISD established the Business Office in 1937. Management of capital and endowment funds remained with the RIHT.

The Rhode Island Hospital Trust Company ledgers document the financial activities of Rhode Island School of Design, 1917-1962, bulk 1917-1938. The ledgers record activity for school and museum accounts including endowment funds, building construction projects, pageants, routine financial matters, and stocks and bonds transactions. The records are critical for documenting museum works of art provenance, 1917-1942, particularly works purchased with Lyra Nickerson Brown endowment funds. The post-1938 records document primarily endowment funds and transactions.

Two of the ledger books contain account information for other Rhode Island institutions: the Rhode Island Episcopal Church Diocesan Trust, 1947-1961; the First Congregational Society, 1930-1948; the Bethany Home, 1931-1947; and Grace Church, 1937-1948.

Administrative information

The Bank of America placed the ledgers on permanent loan with the RISD Archives after their discovery in the RIHT building in 2004.
