The Pembroke Center Oral History Project was initiated in 1982 by Joan Scott, the founding director of the Pembroke Center for Teaching and Research on Women at Brown University, and the Pembroke Center Associates — a group of alumnae, parents and friends who support the Pembroke Center. The goal of the project was to document the college experiences of the women who attended Pembroke and Brown and the effect those experiences had on their post-graduate lives. In 2018 the project welcomed its first two interviews with transgender students. In order to promote gender inclusivity in the collection the project's name was changed from Brown Women Speak to the Pembroke Center Oral History Project in 2019.The project is on-going and features members of Brown University who represent diverse backgrounds, academic and extracurricular interests, and life experiences.

Interviewees speak for over 100 years of Brown University graduates, beginning as early as 1911. During that time, the College for Women in Brown University was renamed Pembroke College in Brown Univeristy in 1928 and eventually merged with the men's college in 1971. The stories the interviewees tell offer an intimate peek into what life was like for students, faculty, and staff at Brown over the course of those years — they also shed light on the many paths they took after graduation.

At the start of the project, interviews were captured on audio cassette by Brown University students and then transcribed by other students. Today, the Pembroke Center Archivist hosts interviews along with Pembroke Alumnae and current Brown students who engage in peer-to-peer interveiws. The use of cassettes fell out of practice after 2006 as DVDs became the popular way to preserve audio and video recordings. Also during the 2000s, interviewers began capturing interviews in born-digital form using Iphones and similar devices. In 2017, it was determined that DVDs would only be created upon the interviewee's request. Presently, interivews are digitally captured -- an effort that is funded by the Pembroke Center and Pembroke Center Associates -- and then sent to a transcription service. The subsequent audio files and transcripts, once reviewed by Pembroke Center Archives staff, are finally deposited into the Brown Digital Reposity for preservation storage and are made available on the Pembroke Center Oral History Project website.

The website was created in 2012 to make these unique, first-hand stories accessible to students, researchers, alumni/ae, and other users interested in learning about the rich history of women, transgender, and gender non-binary students, faculty, and staff at Brown University. This site features a growing collection of digitized interviews and transcripts, as well as supplementary materials that include biographical sketches, yearbook photographs, articles by and about our narrators, and other archival documents. Photographs and other documents have been scanned from Brun Mael and Liber Brunensis, the Pembroke and Brown yearbooks, from the Pembroke Record and the Brown Daily Herald, and from the University Archives held at the John Hay Library.

The Pembroke Center continues to collect interviews each year in addition to annual interviews with the members of the 25th and 50th reunion classes.

The Pembroke Center Oral History Collection includes biographical forms, gift and release agreements, indices of topics discussed, transcripts, audio cassettes, and DVDs centering stories from women and non-binary people at Pembroke College and Brown University dating from 1911 to the present. Generally, the interviews discuss family background, academics, activism, birth control, dormitory life, gender expectations, traditions, race relations, sexism, student activities, the Great Depression, World War I, World War II, the Vietnam War, and the Women's Movement.

The Pembroke Center Oral History Collection is arranged into 5 series.

Series 1, Administrative files, 1980-2017, contains the manuals, papers regarding the project's origins including course and grant proposals, and status reports. This series is arranged alphabetically according to topic.

Series 2, Individual oral histories, 1982-2025, contains any combination of biographical forms, gift and release agreements, indices of topics discussed, transcripts, and/or DVDs for participants interviewed individually. Files are arranged alphabetically according to the interviewee's last name as listed in the yearbook of their graduating class.

Series 3, Reunion and group oral histories, 1982-2025, contains any combination of biographical forms, gift and release agreements, indices of topics discussed, transcripts, and/or DVDs, for participants interviewed in class groups or with members of specific student organizations. Files are arranged alphabetically, class reunions preceding organization interviews, and then chronologically according to graduation year. Series 4, Audio cassettes, 1981-2006, contains audio cassettes for 138 individuals and 2 class reunions. Cassettes are arranged alphabetically according to the interviewee's last name as listed in the yearbook of their graduating class with the reunion cassettes last.

Series 5, Videotapes, 1984-2001, contains videotaped interviews of individuals, groups, and class reunions. Videotapes are arranged alphabetically according to the interviewee's last name as listed in the yearbook of their graduating class with the group and reunion videotapes last.

Series 6, Subseries 2, Restricted electronic records, 1982-1995, contains 7 audio cassettes relating to 5 participants who did not sign release agreements or did not want their interviews to be accessed. Access to the collection

There are no restrictions on access for analog materials, except that Series 5, Subseries 1, Restricted paper material, and Subseries 2, Restricted audio cassettes, are closed for research. The collection can only be seen by prior appointment. Some materials may be stored off-site and cannot be produced on the same day on which they are requested. Advance notice is required to view born-digital records. Born-digital materials in this collection may not have been reformatted yet. Researchers may request access to copies by contacting the John Hay Library with the collection name, collection number, and a description of the item(s) requested. For preservation reasons, original analog and digital media may not be read or played back in the reading room. Users may visually inspect physical media but may not remove it from its enclosure. Audiovisual digitization requests are processed by an approved third-party vendor. Please note, the transfer time required can be as little as several weeks to as long as several months and there may be financial costs associated with the process.
