Historical note

Pembroke College and the Butler-Bradley Mental Health Education Center sponsored "Women: Changing Perspective," which originally consisted of five forums featuring speakers and discussions in March 1971. Many of the participants perceived that women's role in society was changing. Discussions, which continued after the forums were over, turned to how the university could respond to these changes, particularly as Pembroke College was about to merge with Brown University, thus leaving women without an institutional "place." Some of the participants developed proposals for the Pembroke Institute, a combination of a women's center and university extension. The Sarah Doyle Womens' Center was founded in 1975.
