         <head>Biographical note</head>
         <p>The Brown University Library engaged in an exchange program with several libraries in the United Soviet Socialist Republic (U.S.S.R.) during the years 1935-1957. The exchange program was overseen by Brown librarians David A. Jonah and Henry B. Van Hoesen during their respective time as librarians with the library.</p>

         <p>There are no restrictions on access, except that the collection can only be seen by prior appointment. Some materials may be stored off-site and cannot be produced on the same day on which they are requested.</p>

         <p>Although Brown University has physical ownership of the collection and the materials contained therein, it does not claim literary rights.          <p>The Russian Exchange records consist of a wealth of correspondence between Brown University and multiple libraries both in the United States and abroad. The majority of the collection documents the exchange program with the State Lenin Library of the U.S.S.R. The collection includes correspondence both in Russian and English documenting exchange of documents between the State University of Leningrad in the U.S.S.R., the Academy of Sciences of the U.S.S.R. and the Moscow State University Library in the U.S.S.R. The collection also includes correspondence between Brown University and multiple college and university libraries in the United States listing materials available. There is additional material available about exchange programs between Brown University and UNESCO and Latin American libraries.</p>
