Founded in 1812, the Rhode Island Medical Society is a voluntary association of physicians, physician assistants, and medical students. It supports and advocates for all Rhode Island physicians in their efforts to provide the best possible care to their patients. For more than 160 years, the Rhode Island Medical Society maintained a library, which grew to about 50,000 volumes by 1980. In 1987 the Rhode Island Medical Society made a gift of its collection to Brown University. The most significant historical portions of the collection are now housed at the John Hay Library of Brown University. Other volumes were interdigitated with the collection in the Sciences Library.
The Human Skull in Series 6 is restricted out of respect for the human remains. It is only available for scholarly research. The Library is not currently granting permission to publish or reproduce images of it. The rest of the collection is open without restriction and can be seen by prior appointment. Some materials may be stored off-site and cannot be produced on the same day on which they are requested.
Although Brown University has physical ownership of the collection and the materials contained therein, it does not claim literary rights. Researchers should note that compliance with copyright law is their responsibility. Researchers must determine the owners of the literary rights and obtain any necessary permissions from them.

With photo of it in 1979 exhibit, an exhibit tag with information on nipple shields, and a copy of a 1998 article from "Lancet "about a modern case of lead poisoning from a nipple shield.
The frame contains the tractors and a letter of donation about them from Adoniram B. Judson. Pasted to the back of the frame are a picture of former owner Adoniram Judson Sr. (1752-1826), an article about him, and a note about where some of Judson Sr.'s other possession are. There is also a photo of the tractors in the 1979 exhibit.
Exhibit sign shows an old medical drawing with a picture of a similar-looking speculum.
Card says "Gift Rochese."
Belonged to Doctor William Gorham Shaw, one of the charter members of the RIMS. They were made to his order by the village blacksmith. He was the grandfather of the donator, Dr. Burge. Dr. Shaw's 1809 daybook was donated at the same time. There is also an exhibit tag for a drawing of forceps.
