Rush Christopher Hawkins was born September 14, 1831 in Pomfret, Vermont. His father died at age eight, leaving him an orphan. This state of affairs did not prevent him from beginning to amass a collection that would come to include manuscripts, books, periodicals, broadsides, and art while still a young boy. Nor did it deprive him of an education during his early years. As a youth he attended local common schools. He was likewise a student at the Norwich Military Academy in Vermont for a period of time.
At age sixteen Hawkins relocated to Boston and while still a minor enlisted in the 2nd U.S. Dragoons and served in the Mexican War. In the years following the conflict he traveled widely in the United States and moved to New York state. Here Hawkins took up the study of the law in 1851 and became an attorney prior to 1860. On June 30 of that year he married Annmary Brown, the granddaughter of Nicholas Brown, for whom Brown University is named. With the outbreak of the Civil War Hawkins raised and accepted a commission as colonel of the 9th New York Volunteer Infantry regiment, which came to be known as Hawkins's Zouaves. He served credibly, though often embroiled in controversy with his superiors, until being mustered out of the service along with his regiment in 1863. In the years after the war Hawkins lived in New York, served a term in the New York state legislature in 1872 as a reformer, was a deputy U.S. marshal, and earned great wealth via real estate and various investments. He also became prominent in the worlds of art and incunabula and his collection of the later came to be second only to that held by the British Museum.
In 1886 Hawkins donated his eleven hundred-book and pamphlet Civil War collection to the University of Vermont in Burlington. This Rush C. Hawkins Civil War Collection is housed at the Bailey Howe Library and is under the control of the University's Special Collections Department (802-656-2138).
In 1907 he built the Annmary Brown Memorial located at 21 Brown Street, Providence, as a memorial to his deceased wife. It was designed as a tomb for the couple (both are interred there), and to house Hawkins's collection of incunabula, paintings, manuscripts, books authored by or written about individuals with the surname of Hawkins, travel books, bibliographies, biographies, standard histories, books on printing wood engravings, and volumes on the early history of printing. Hawkins died at St. Vincent Hospital in New York in 1920 after being struck by an automobile. Twenty-four years later the Memorial was deeded to Brown University. In 1990 the entire collection, with the exception of the paintings, was transferred to the John Hay Library. Sometime thereafter Hawkins's renowned incunabula collection, his several thousand-count book collection, as well as a large manuscript collection featuring many historically valuable documents were made available to researchers at the John Hay Library.

Currently on display in the Annmary Brown Memorial. This Currier and Ives lithograph commenmorated the victory in this print intended for popular consumption. Print shows multiple soldiers charging forward, with many wounded soldiers on the ground. Caption reads: "The Victory of Roanoke, Feby. 8th 1862. Report (22 pages) was published by Free Press Printing Co. in 1909. A portrait of George Grenville Benedict is laid in, and includes a note written and signed on the verso by Rush C. Hawkins that is dated Sept. 23, 1911.
Currently on display in the Annmary Brown Memorial. Two clippings of illustrations of the US Centennial from Leslie's Illustrated Newspaper and Harper's Weekly, July 22, 1876.
Pasted inside are two pages of Hawkins's notes. Inside the front cover of the book is a full-page newspaper story from the December 22, 1912 issue of The New York Times. It covers the revealing of deceased Confederate Gen. George E. Pickett as the author of a series of letters which were published anonymously by his widow. (The clipping was disposed of and a photocopy of a portion of what was a full-page story inserted in its place.) Pickett was the commander who ordered the controversial hangings discussed in Hawkins's book
In it are found pasted two letters written to Hawkins related to his purchase of the volume, an invitation to the celebration of the 51st anniversary of the organization of his regiment hosted by the Hawkins Zouaves's Association, and three unidentified and undated newspaper clippings that contain valuable biographical details about Hawkins and information about the 1886 sale of his home in New York City. A loose page of notes penned by Hawkins is likewise interleaved in the book.

Dear General Hawkins: It pleases me very much that you have found the spoon worthy of acceptance for the Memorial, a place which gave my husband so much pleasure to visit and where I pass many interesting hours at different times. One wonders what became of the rest of the dozen- The late Mrs. John Carter Brown gave the spoon to Miss Sarah Ann Fish--about thirty or forty years ago. Accompanying exhibition note: "Another note among the Hawkins papers reads: 'Mrs. Susan Bowers when a young woman worked for Moses Brown, and, during her time of working there she received a number of presents, among which, were a pair of candle snuffers, and a pair of spectacles, and an umberilla [sic]. If I remember correctly, they were given to her father. After his death she kept them and was always very proud to show them and tell where they came from. After her death, they came to her daughter, Helen P. Bullock who died in 1913 aged 79 years. They then came to me. [signed] Thomas M. Aldrich. (Mrs. Bowers died in 1885 aged 81 years).'"

Stands about 2.5 feet tall. Wooden frame. Damage - A puncture hole in the back. Sent to University of Rhode Island, Textile Program for conservation work, January 2018.
Currently on display in the Annmary Brown Memorial. Firescreen depicting King Charles I on the eve of his execution. General Hawkins believed this to be the handicraft of Annmary's mother. The screen was damaged and the lower brace lost in years past. In the autumn of 1980, the piece was restored by Pasquale Carpinelli of Brown's capentry shop.
Note by Rush Hawkins: "This portrait of a little Roman girl was painted by a young Russian artist by the name of Carl Bickschowsky [?] who gave it to my dear wife, because as he said, she would look like [it] if in peasant costume and engaged in knitting. This was about 1846 and it was kept in a book until about 1854 when it was put in the present frame and hung in her bedroom where it remained until her mothers death in 1879. R.C.H." Painting has been removed from frame for preservation. Enclosed is a scan of Hawkins' note.

Bronze plaque, leather mounted. Low relief depicting a World War I French nurse offering sympathy to an artist's family with ghostlike war scene in the background surrounding Rheims Cathedral. Engraved: "La Fraternite des Artistes a Monsieur R. C. Hawkins." Also includes illustrated newspaper clipping, explaining the fraternite's gratitude and stating that M. Leon Bonnat is president of La Fraternite des Artistes and Director of the Beaux Arts. Reverse has a soldier report on the day Paris received the news of peace.
Note on cover by Rush Hawkins: "The jewelry in this box belonged to my parents [see AMB 94] some containing the hair of themselves and the writer--the beads [see AMB 89] belonged to my g.g. grandmother Hutchinson. This pocketbook he carried during his last two years of service. When I first saw it in his private desk at Pomfret Vermont, say about 1837, it contained a large number of Continental notes that he received in payment for his services at the end of the war. Currently on display in the Annmary Brown Memorial. Confederate drum caputured at Minton, North Carolina, July 19, 1862. A label pasted inside the drum states that it was made by 'Wright and Bell, Confederate Drum Manufactory, Richmond, VA'. Drum is painted blue and red with a rope crossing its casing, and a painted eagle on the front holding arrows and a Confederate flag with a scroll in its mouth that reads "Confederate States".

Note by Rush Hawkins: "A piece from the regimental flag of the ninth New York Volunteer Infantry - 'Hawkins Zouaves.' In my memory, sacred beyond expression, because my love for the brave men who fought and fell beneath its folds. R.C.H."
Contains two envelopes of hair: [1] "First growth of the hair of Anne Mary when [?] child. Cut off this day the 6th Feb. 1841 by her mother. The child is hale and harty [sic]." Hair is missing. [2] "First growth of the hair of our third child Ann Mary, cut off at St Cruz Saturday Feb 6th 1841. by her mother." Hair contained in envelope. Also contains note by Rush Hawkins: "I believe this hair was cut from the head of my dear wife when, or soon after, she was at school in Geneva. Sept. 30, 1913. RCH"
One note by Rush Hawkins: "This purse is just as she bought it from the street about Dec. 15, 1902. It was her last time out before the fatal illness. RCH." Other notes by curator: "This box was property of General Hawkins"; "2 fans broken; 1 worn chain purse; 1 cameo pin which is deteriorating"; "Handle--Broken--from silver vase on desk".

Relic of a 700-year-old white oak tree that grew on Wyllys Hyll in Hartford, Connecticut, blown down in a storm on August 21, 1856. Connecticut's Royal Charter of 1662 was reportedly hidden in a hollow to prevent its being taken by the English governor-general.
Crocheted lace covers the yoke and shoulders of the bodice, with sleeves and torso made from embroidered satin. Crocheted trim is stitched around both cuffs of the full-length sleeves. Ruffled self-fabric trim covers the seam between the lace yoke and the torso. Skirt is made with six gores, with faux-Swiss belt made from blue China silk and tan, machine-made lace ruffle along the bottom.
A lined wool plaid cape with shoulder cape and velvet-edged collar. A metal hook and eye with two linked rings at the neckline create an adjustable closure. A fabric loop sewn at center of back would allow the cape to be hung on a hook. The original colors are dark blue, green, brown, yellow, and red.
Man's brown wool coat with cotton twill-tape trim in a militaristic style. The dark brown velvet collar has a stiff high stand and is not sewn to the lapel. The expert pad stitching in the collar lining suggest it is a tailor-made garment. Eight damask-covered toggle closures and black tape trim loops are located on the double-breasted bodice and four at the center back where the two back shirt panels overlap. They are not sewn together, which allows the coat to be worn for horseback riding. The waistline and armscye are located at the natural position; the shoulder seam is dropped to the back at an angle. Each shaped sleeve has two buttons and the black trim. A black-trimmed pocket is located at each side front, and the coat also has a left-side, interior breast pocket. The bodice fronts and back shoulder area are lined with the brown wool. The bodice back and skirt are lined with black wool, and the sleeves are lined with a plain-weave, undyed fabric. The skirt has a woven inner lining that can be seen through some of the insect holes. The coat is completely handstitched.
Child's printed dress of starched cotton fabric ca. 1835 with leg of mutton sleeves, empire waist, shirring detail, and hand-stitching. Features a repeat pattern of flowers The waist measures 10 ½ inches, sleeves measure 11 ½ inches, and the length is 21 ¼ inches. Single-tie enclosure on the back of the dress.
A c. 1890 purple wool afternoon dress comprised of separate bodice and skirt. Embellished with black beading and rabbit fur trim. Bodice appears to be altered from an 1890s to a later c. 1900 pigeon-breasted or monobosom silhouette. In-boning is present with a striped fabric lining and hook and eye enclosures down center-front. A 2 ¼" inch velvet band has been added around waist with hook and eye closure. Bodice is embellished with a pre-made appliqued beaded decoration around neckline, down center-back, and down each side of center- front waist.
Red wool children's dress with empire waist and lined bodice. Most probably from the 1830s. Hand stitched with off white and blue thread. Blue printed cotton trim around the cuffs. Faded cotton trim around neckline. Mother of pearl buttons on pocket flaps and back opening. Previous repairs, including darning with off white thread throughout the skirt and at the base of the placket at the back opening, as well as a patch of red wool on the proper left (PL) sleeve.
Child's red wool dress with printed cotton trim at the cuff and neckline; 1 ½ in waistband set in; estimated construction date 1830s; hand sewn with wool sewing thread. Neckline trims is faded blue and white printed cotton, and the cuff trim is brown and white printed cotton. The center back placket (12 in long) has a row of 7 mother of pearl buttons. Two pockets in the skirt front each have one row of 3 mother of pearl bottoms.
This yellow brocaded chiné evening gown has been altered from its original construction to be fashionable in the early-twentieth century. Originally, this gown would have been worn and constructed in fashion with the 1870s-80s silhouette. Short sleeves and square neckline indicate the gown was worn in the evening. The square neckline is original to the gown, the embroidered net modesty panel with high neckline and monobosom style front was added later to adapt the dress to 1903-05 fashions. The bodice is decorated with lace edging along the front closure, sleeves, and along the bottom edge.
Possibly constructed by Native Americans.
Light blue wool tea gown featuring machine and hand stitching with polychrome satin stitch embroidery of leaves and blossoms. Blue satin ruched trimmings, made by pleating a strip of lace so that it ruffles on both sides, outline the embroidery at center front and back, collar, cuffs, and pocket. Self-covered buttons are found down front of dress. A machine-lace ruffle has been hand-stitched around neckline. The bodice features a beige silk underlining and princess body silhouette.
Currently on display in the Annmay Brown Memorial. Items belonging to Rush Hawkins. The case contained an engraved Tiffany sword that was presented to Colonel Rush Hawkins by the 9th NY Zouaves and influential friends, shortly after he mustered out of service in May of 1863. The sword itself was stolen, along with other items, from the Memorial when it was temporarily closed between 1975 and 1977. The sword's design was approved for use by generals--not colonels. Charles Kirkland, the keynote speaker at its presentation ceremony, justified such a gift by asserting that Col. Hawkins had "performed the duties of a Brigadier General" while commanding the 9th NY. This tribute foreshadowed Hawkins' honorary promotion to the rank of brevet brigadier general two years after his military service ended.
Currently on display in the Annmary Brown Memorial. Red fez with matching red sash. Rush Hawkins note to accompany the fez: "Knit and made up for me by my darling wife, but not in time to war in the field".
Zouaves dark blue dress jacket: long with 2 rows of 6 large buttons; decorative gold braid on both sleeves. This coat has a single clasp at the top.
Zouaves dark blue jacket: long with 7 large buttons on each side of the chest; decorative gold braid on both sleeves. This coat buttons down the middle and flairs below the waist.
Black dress coat with accompanying cape. The collar of the coat is fitted with buttons to which the cape can be attached. Only two of these buttons remain. The kick vent was designed with buttons; only the top and bottom buttons remain. There is one loose button stored in the left pocket of the coat
Two red fabric sashes with large tassels on both ends. Most likely worn around the waist as part of the Zouves uniform. First sash is 233 cm; second is 255 cm. Tassles are slightly different between the sashes.
Two sets of shoulder bars: one with green velvet and eagle, one with green canvas and eagle with shield. Two sets of patches with eagle in center (one small, 14 x 7 cm, and one large, 18 x 9 cm, patch per set). One gold tassle on loop of gold ribbon.
Vest is dark blue with strip of red velvet running down the middle; gold buttons with gold trim (one button is missing). Coat is short: navy with gold trim and red ornamentation on shoulders and sleeves.
Currently on display in the Annmary Brown Memorial. Two Union army kepis worn by the Hawkins' Zouaves. Red with black brim. One has an ornate "9" stiched into the front with decoration.
One vest is dark blue with gold buttons, no ornamentation. The other vest is smaller, also dark blue, but with ornate gold decorative stitching with tassels. Pair of beige suade gauntlets (one of the gauntlets is currently on display in the Annmary Brown Memorial).
The Rush Hawkins Papers (1750-1951 (bulk: 1830-1917)) is a wide-ranging collection that includes correspondence, financial documents, scrapbooks, photographs, artwork, and artifacts. The material represents Hawkins' experience as a Civil War general, as an art collector and philanthropist, and as the husband of Annmary Brown, the oldest living daughter of Nicholas Brown III. Also contained is a large collection of late 18th century correspondence related to the Brown Family, and a large collection of documents and correspondence related to the Civil War, including many Jefferson Davis communications to the Senate of the Confederate States. The papers are arranged in eleven series:

There are no restrictions on access, except that the collection can only be seen by prior appointment. Some materials may be stored off-site and cannot be produced on the same day on which they are requested.
All the materials described here were part of the collections at the Annmary Brown Memorial established by Rush Hawkins in memory of his wife. Ownership of the Annmary Brown Memorial was transferred to Brown University in 1948. To increase research access and promote their long-term preservation the materials related to Rush Hawkins and Annmary Brown, were physically moved to the John Hay Library in 2004 and 2017.
In the fall semester of 2023, all objects in the collection were renumbered sequentially. Former item numbers are included in the processing note for each object.
