Biographical/Historical Note

The 9th United States Cavalry was one of four segregated African American regiments established in the United States Army after the Civil War. Along with the 10th Cavalry and the 24th and 25th Infantry regiments, these units became known as the Buffalo Soldiers and served on the western frontier during the Indian Wars.

During the Spanish-American War in 1898, African American regiments were among the first United States troops deployed to Cuba, serving alongside volunteer units such as the 23rd Kansas Volunteer Infantry. Despite their service, African American soldiers continued to face widespread racial discrimination during and after the war.
