Daniel Russell Brown (1848–1919), also referred to as Russell Brown and D. Russell Brown served as the 43rd governor of Rhode Island from 1892 to 1895. His term coincided with the planning and celebration of the World’s Columbian Exposition, held in Chicago in 1892–1893 to commemorate the 400th anniversary of Columbus’s voyage. As governor, Brown was part of Rhode Island’s official participation in the fair, attending events and representing the state at ceremonial functions.

Materials include invitations and tickets to official events, menus from banquets and luncheons, printed programs for ceremonies and performances, and guidebooks distributed to visitors. Together, these items document the social and ceremonial activities of Rhode Island’s delegation and provide insight into the culture of national expositions in the late nineteenth century.
