Biographical/Historical Note

Marietta Burgess Wisbey was born in Winnebago, Minnesota, on April 29, 1893, the daughter of Andrew and Addie McColley Burgess. She was a Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Pembroke College, the Women's College in Brown University, class of 1916. While at Pembroke, she was the president of the Christian Association, a member of the question club, and a member of the crucible. In the Sophomore masque theatrical performance she was the character of "Charity," and also one of the chairmen of the masque committee. All of these activities took place in the academic year of 1916. In the academic year of 1915, she was chairman of committees and on the Brun Mael board as the assistant business manager.

She taught briefly in Bristol, Rhode Island, prior to her marriage to Herbert A Wisbey, who was principal in Providence, Rhode Island, schools for more than 30 years before his passing on December 26, 1953. For more than 50 years she was a resident of Cranston, Rhode Island.

She was a former member of the Elmwood Woman's Club of Providence and was a former member of the Board of Directors of what was then the Knight Memorial Library of Providence.

Wisbey passed away on May 4, 1988, in Horseheads, New York, at the age of 95.
