This record group contains communications and administrative materials originating from the office of the Dean of Women. The papers of Sister M. Constance, RSM, the Dean of Students whose title changed to Dean of Women in 1959, are not present.

The Dean of Women position served a dean of students role, overseeing non-academic life and housing at Salve Regina College 1965-1973. From 1949-c. 1959, there was a Dean of Students in lieu of a Dean of Women. Beginning in academic year 1959-1960, the Dean of Students position was changed to Dean of Women.
A Sister of Mercy always served in this role: Sister M. Constance, RSM, Ed. D, formerly Dean of Students (1959-1961); Sister Mary Donald Egan, RSM, M.A. (1962-1968); RSM Sister M. Sheila O'Brien, RSM, M.S. in L.S. (1970); Sister Maria Renata Cremins, RSM (1970). The office was superceded by the Dean of Students after the college became coeducational.
