This collection consists of autographs on calling cards or small slips of paper from various United States and Rhode Island politicians, merchants, and servicemen from the late nineteenth century through the early twentieth century. Letters are also found in this collection, but were most likely collected because of the signature on the letter rather than its content. Letters from the 1930 were typically addressed to Mrs. Sherman’s husband, Edward A. Sherman, who worked at the Newport Trust Company. Of particular interest is the letter dated May 25, 1918, signed by Franklin D. Roosevelt (1882-1945) in his position as Assistant Secretary of the Navy.
