<p>William Channing Gibbs (1789-1871) was born in Newport, Rhode Island, on February 10, 1789, the youngest son of George (1775-1803) and Mary Channing Gibbs. Gibbs served in the Rhode Island state militia and rose to the rank of Major General. From 1816 through 1820, he represented Newport in the Rhode Island General Assembly and then served as the governor from May 2, 1821, to May 5, 1824. He was married to Mary Kane of Albany, New York, and had eleven children. William C. Gibbs died on February 24, 1871.</p>

<p>This collection consists of one letter and a commission, both signed by William C. Gibbs during his term as governor of Rhode Island. The letter is addressed to Colonel Josiah Whitaker, Adjutant General in Providence on February 7, 1822, regarding commissions sent to Aides-de-camp which needed to be corrected. The commission, dated June 16, 1823, appointed Asa Winson justice of the peace (judge) in Smithfield, Rhode Island. This commission was also signed by Henry Bowen (1785-1867), secretary of Rhode Island.</p>
