H. L. (Henry Lloyd) Herbert helped to establish and cultivate the sport of polo in the United States. In 1890, he guided the organization and development of the Polo Association, later known as the United States Polo Association, which became the national governing body for the sport of polo in the United States. The Polo Association opened on March 21, 1890, with their headquarters at 71 Broadway in New York, New York. Herbert was named the association’s first chairman, holding that position until 1921.
