Biographical note

<dao xlink:href="http://dl.lib.brown.edu/riamco/graphics/US-RNHi.jpg"/>

Charles E. Hammett Jr. was a notable Newport resident who owned and operated a stationery store at 124 Thames Street in the late 19th century. That store also tuned pianos and sewing machines, as stated by a 1867 Newport Directory. Somewhat of a Renaissance man, he was also a publisher. Hammett notably published "Reminiscense of Newport" by George Champlin Mason.

Hammett amassed one of the largest libraries in Newport; the published bibliographies of which are owned by the Historical Society's library collection.
